In conversation with Sharon Nortje Sharon Nortje, RAM Export Manager, is the proud recipient of a RAM Long Service award. Sharon has been part of the RAM family since 1994. Q: Before your appointment as Export Manager, what other positions have you held at RAM? A: I was originally employed as a Girl Friday and then became PA to Nathan and Graeme. After that I became an Export and Import Data Capturer. Q: In your opinion how has RAM changed/grown since you started? A: RAM’s growth has been phenomenal. When I first started working at RAM Nathan and I worked out of a tiny little office. Nathan had sold his insurance firm and wanted to do something easier, less stressful and more enjoyable to take him into retirement – nothing too hectic! Think again, Nathan! The company has just grown from strength to strength, thanks to Graeme and David who joined the business soon after I did. Both sons have taken the company from what it was then to what it is now! Quite an achievement, that has taken a lot of hard work. The local side of the business has just boomed and the import/export side of the business has also grown in leaps and bounds. Q: What has kept you with RAM for this long? A: Loyalty and great bosses (and no - I’m not schlooping up to them). Nathan, Graeme and David have been very good to me over the years and I appreciate that. They have always had an open-door policy. I have always been able to approach them, no matter what. They demand their pound of flesh, but it doesn’t go unrewarded. Q: What is the best part about your job? A: I enjoy the people we deal with and the fact that our customers have utmost trust in us. When they give us their parcels, often worth large sums of money, they do so without hesitation. The personal yet professional relationships that we have with them have been created and nurtured by the company since its inception. It is also great coming to work and dealing with people that I have known for years and regard as friends. I believe it is important to be happy in your job. Q: What is the most challenging aspect of your job? A: Ensuring every customer receives excellent service and that his or her needs are met. We can have 30 clients come into our office at any one time, and they will all want to export before 12.30. This presents a real challenge. Getting all the exports captured, manifested, sent through the diamond board, and on to the airlines without any errors is a big challenge in itself. In our business you cannot afford to make one mistake, no matter how small. Q: How has South Africa’s courier services industry evolved over the last 11 years? A: When I first started working here, security was not a real issue. Today, with security as the key concern for any courier company, one has to be a lot more cautious, pay extra attention to every detail of the process, and be highly efficient. Q: How would you describe a day in the life of a RAM Export Manager? A: There is not one day that is ever the same. I deal with queries from our overseas branches. I make sure all the exports are captured and cleared correctly. I clear exports and imports through the SA Diamond Board. I collect bourse goods for clients. I bill all imports inbound for Johannesburg and Cape Town. The main part of my job is handling the accounts for the exports division, which entails debtors, creditors and billing. I also reconcile inter-office accounts with our worldwide counterparts. And then there are the normal things like giving quotes, arranging site collections, billing site collections, and dealing with new customers and existing customers. Q. How do you like spending your free time? A: I enjoy water-skiing. I love spending time with my two children. I also enjoy scrapbooking and most crafty type of hobbies. I also love getting together with close friends and family and just having a good time. You only live once. Q: What motivates you as a person? A: Successful people. I always look up to people who have done well for themselves and I strive to do well myself. My children also motivate me tremendously - anyone with children would understand that. In conversation with Adolf Davids Having joined RAM in 1995, Operations Manager, Adolf Davids was the second recipient of a RAM Long Service award. Q: What did you do before you were employed by RAM? A: I was in security. I managed security guards and their site postings. Q: Before your appointment as Operations Manager, what other positions have you held at RAM? A: When I started with RAM I was a Secure Courier doing normal collections/deliveries of parcels. I was then promoted to escort high value freight from the hub to JHB International airport. As the company grew, I moved up as I had an intimate understanding of the business and its operations. Q: How has RAM changed/grown over the years? A: The company has grown really quickly. I still remember our very first vehicle, an armored Toyota Stallion. Its registration number was RNM600T. Today, we have a fleet of over 200 vehicles – that is testimony to RAM’s growth. Q: What has kept you with RAM for this long? A: Loyalty and the fact that I love what I do. Q: What makes RAM different from other courier companies? A: The unrivalled service we offer our clients. Q: What is the best part about your job? A: Having a happy and satisfied client and the compliments I receive. Both confirm that that I am doing a good job. Q: What is the most challenging aspect of your job? A: Keeping 3000 to 4000 clients happy on any given day. Q: How has South Africa’s courier services industry over the last 10 years? A: It has given small entrepreneurs the opportunity to form businesses and grow. However, I feel that the market has reached saturation point and the big courier companies have made it increasingly difficult for the smaller companies to survive. Q: What does being a RAM Operations Manager involve? A: My main responsibility is dispatching. I also manage receiving of goods, staff related issues, administration, disciplinary procedures, route planning and day-to-day customer queries. Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a career in courier? A: If you are looking to pursue a career in logistics, the industry is vast and lucrative and definitely worth considering. Q: How do you like to spend your free time? A: I love spending my free time with my wife and kids, going to the flea market and motor racing events. Q: What motivates you as a person? A: Knowing that I have a support structure in my wife and children and seeing them happy. |

Carriage of Dangerous Substances Ram Hand to Hand Couriers is a Domestic Carrier utilizing both and air and road networks across the country. We do not carry goods which are, or can be classified under the applicable Dangerous Goods Regulations, those substances which carry a hazardous content label or the carriage of which falls under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations and carry a United Nations specification ( a UN number). Ram Hand to Hand Couriers will not transport the following goods, Explosives; Flammable gases; Flammable Liquids, Including Petroleum spirit or other flammable liquids; Infectious substances; Poisonous substances; Toxic substances; Magnetic material; Radioactive material or any miscellaneous substances falling under UN Classification 9. Goods transported, which rely upon flammable liquids or gases for propulsion, must have those substances removed before they are handed over for transportation. It is an offence to knowingly fail to declare the contents of a consignment, if that consignment contains goods or constituent parts which are classified under the Transport of Dangerous Goods Regulations. |
